Shawn Mendes is opening up about his breakup with Camila Cabello and navigating love with the world watching.

In a recent appearance on Jay Shetty's On Purpose podcast, Mendes got candid about his love life, admitting that "no matter how strong mentally you are, when there are millions of people commenting on [your relationships], it's so hard not to be affected by it and to be swayed by it and to be inspired by it."

Mendes went on to discuss his on-and-off relationship with Cabello. The pair dated from 2019 until 2021, when they called it quits. They briefly reconnected in 2023 after Coachella but broke up again shortly after.

"Camila and I have done the best job at preserving our private little fire of love for each other," Mendes said of their relationship. The singer said the duo relied on "immense honesty [and] over communication" to keep their relationship afloat while dating despite external comments and media coverage." It immediately cuts through any type of assumption."

As far as his current love life is concerned, Mendes added that he avoids going on social media to check any discourse that might be happening, which is fitting since he has recently been at the center of love triangle speculation with Sabrina Carpenter and Camila Cabello.

"I don't see or care what people say about my love life or my relationships because it's honestly too detrimental to the actual relationship itself. I've become pretty strict on that part of it," Mendes said. "It isn't a movie. This is real life, and love is confusing and hard and goes through dips, goes through pauses, goes through breaks, goes through so much."
