Comfortable footwear is a must-have during summer, and if you are on the lookout for your next shoe, Princess Sofia and Crown Princess Leonor of Spain might have just given you the perfect inspo during a recent official visit with their family for the Princess of Girona Awards.

On July 15, the young Spanish royals were photographed wearing matching espadrilles during a visit to the Empúries archaeological site in the Catalonian region of Girona, which, per its official website, “is the only archaeological site in the Iberian Peninsula where the remains of a Greek city, Empòrion, coexist with those from the Roman city, Emporiae.”

The two sisters arrived on site wearing breezy summer outfits, each completed with a different pair of espadrilles, a typical Spanish shoe, especially for summer, traditionally made with a jute sole and a canvas upper. While Sofia opted for a flat style in a super light blue colorway to match her Rivera pants, Crown Princess Leonor went for a classic wedge style in white to match the bottom half of her outfit.

Espadrilles are not just a go-to for Spanish royals but also earning a spot in pop culture. Lola Tung’s Belly even wore a couple of pairs by Castañer during season three of The Summer I Turned Pretty last year, even before her Parisian escapade commenced.

Leonor's outfit also featured a white top to match her pants and shoes, as well as a magenta linen blazer from the Spanish brand Mirto and a matching bag from Heimat Atlantica, which retails for 220€. Like the shoes, the brand's bags are also proudly European and made by artisans on the coast of northern Spain and Portugal.

Leonor and Sofia were not the only ones proudly sporting espadrilles; their mother, Queen Letizia, also wore a pair of traditional black espadrilles with the classic wrap-around laces to offset her floral Boss dress, which she also previously wore to the Madrid Book Fair in 2025.

Queen Letizia is a noted fan of the style, especially during official visits, and has often been seen in pairs from brands such as Castañer, Gaimo, and Macarena. However, their latest picks for all three women are from Espadrilles Picón, which she has also favored multiple times in the past, as have her daughters. This time around, Letizia seemingly opted for the Lea style, which is a slightly shorter wedge, while Leonor went for the Ibiza and Sofia chose a version not available on the site, also with the wraparound detail like her mother's.

If you want a versatile, trendy, and comfortable sandal for summer, consider a pair of Made-in-Spain espadrilles.
