If you are a Stranger Things fan living in the U.S., we have some great news for you because you’ll soon be able to see Stranger Things: The First Shadow without leaving the country, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.
Stranger Things: The First Shadow, a prequel play canon to the Netflix hit series, will officially make its way to Broadway in the spring of 2025, with previews starting at the Marquis Theatre on March 28, 2025, and an opening night expected in April. The play has been showing in London’s West End since December 2023. It was previously reported that the play was set to close in August 2024 as it prepared to transfer to Broadway in 2025.
In case you are not yet familiar with Stranger Things: The First Shadow, it was written by Kate Trefry based on an original story created by The Duffer Brothers in tandem with Trefry and Jack Thorne, who had previously worked together on Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.
The play takes place in 1959 Hawkins and follows younger versions of the adult characters from the Netflix show, including Joyce (portrayed by Winona Ryder on the show), Hopper (David Harbour), and Bob Newby (Sean Astin).
The West End production features Oscar Lloyd as James Hopper Jr., Isabella Pappas as Joyce Maldonado, and Chris Buckley as Bob Newby, among others. Castings for the Broadway show are yet to be announced.
The official logline for the play is as follows: “Young Jim Hopper’s car won’t start, Bob Newby’s sister won’t take his radio show seriously, and Joyce Maldonado just wants to graduate and get the hell out of town. When new student Henry Creel arrives, his family finds that a fresh start isn’t so easy… and the shadows of the past have a very long reach.” The play is expected to take viewers “right back to the beginning of the Stranger Things story” and teases it “may hold the key to the end.”
