The jorts trend is taking off thanks to stars like Stray Kids leader Bang Chan and style prodigies Emme Muñiz and North West. After years of being the butt of the joke, thanks to their clutch over dads’ closets in the '90s, jorts are officially making a comeback.
Getting a head start on this hot summer trend, the Stray Kids leader posted photos of himself wearing long jorts on his Instagram page. To complete the look, he opted for a white Fendi hoodie designed in collaboration with Japanese artist Tarout and matching platform sneakers. He also threw in a black beanie, an addition that stays in his outfit rotation.
Emme Muñiz was similarly spotted wearing them earlier this season, combining them with another 90s staple, high-top sneakers. North West gave them a trendier spin with a fluttery tank top for her birthday.
They're not the only ones. Bella Hadid, Hailey Bieber and other street style stars have been rotating denim shorts in their wardrobes for quite some time now. So, love it or hate it, extra long, culotte-like shorts had a resurgence last year and have been dubbed nu-metal shorts. Since then, they’ve been trending, with some even incorporating them into their cold-weather looks by pairing them with boots. With the temperatures so high, they’re understandably everywhere this summer. With their looser silhouettes, they’re a chic and comfortable way to both look and stay cool, especially if you pick the right fabrics.
But with their controversial reputations, we can totally get it if you’re not sure where to start. That’s why we chatted with our fellow editors to get some more ideas on how to style the jorts trend.
Blouse With Jorts
“All this season and the last, I’ve seen them styled with ballet flats, kitten heels, and countless other variations of a dainty shoe and tiny camisole for contrast,” Editorial Assistant Skyli Alvarez says. “And there’s of course the classic tank top-jorts-carabiner-Docs uniform. I went for a little mix of both by pairing them with a puff-sleeve button-up blouse. Wanting to keep with the utilitarianism, I went with slouchy, studded black boots and a couple of chain bracelets. I think of jorts as the slacker-rock younger sibling to bermudas, so unflattering-they’re-flattering type of pant that’s too loud to ignore.”
Graphic Tee With Jorts
Sometimes, styling doesn’t require tons and tons of layers, especially when it’s so hot outside. Sometimes, all it takes is a cute top. Take a note from Associate Director of Programming & Creative Development Amalie MacGowan and wear a pair of accented jorts with a graphic t-shirt that has a personality of its own.
Oversized Shirts and Cropped Tops With Jorts
If you’re someone who likes the best of both worlds, combine your favorite crop top with an oversized overshirt and accessorize accordingly. During Primavera Sound 2024, Editor at Large Sara Delgado found this formula to be an ideal festival ‘fit. She said, “Since it was mostly a daylight day for me, I dressed for the warm weather and opted for a vintage checkered men's shirt from Carhartt over long jorts in a black wash from Pull&Bear, some white socks, and my Prada brogues. Since it was super hot during the day in Barcelona, I actually opened up my shirt and wore my bra as a tube top, which I ended up liking more anyway since it gave an otherwise masculine 'fit a softer edge, and I was surprisingly in the mood for that.
Long Sleeves With Jorts
I love the juxtaposition of shorts and long-sleeved shirts. During cooler summer nights and temperate early fall days, I try to take advantage of the weather and wear this combo as much as I can, especially with looser sweaters or rugby shirts for a casual and cool look. Add a pair of flip flops, and you've got a look that will make you feel like you're in The Summer I Turned Pretty. But when it is warmer, a blouse will do the trick too. A cute pair of ballet sneakers will complete the look.
