It was recently announced that Sydney Sweeney will play the titular role in a Barbarella remake, following in the footsteps of Jane Fonda, who played the fiery heroine in Roger Vadim’s 1968 film.
Moving away from the sugar-sweet pastels and teeny basics she wore as Cassie in Euphoria, Sydney Sweeney channeled her new on-screen character at a recent event in L.A., wearing a pretty-tough look from Rokh’s most recent spring/summer 2023 collection.
The actor wore look 35, comprising a crunchy jacket-cum-top with sculptural cups – hello, Barbarella – a punky skirt, and leather pants. Rather than going full Fonda with a back-combed bouffant hairstyle, Sweeney wore her hair in a wet-look middle parting, with minimal make-up.
Expect plenty more where that came from. The upcoming press tours, appearances, and junkets for Barbarella will allow her to experiment with a whole new style mood. While the actor’s Cassie phase championed sweet Miu Miu separates and princess silhouettes – see: the angelic Tory Burch look that she wore to the Met Gala, which transformed from a billowing gown into a minidress – Barbarella is a cue for empowering fashion.
Her latest hardcore leather look suggests that there are more Barbarella nods on the cards. Here’s hoping she’ll recreate the movie’s iconic armor-like green leotard on the red carpet.
