Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell's rom-com Anyone But You was a runaway hit in late 2023, and apparently, we have those cursed Euphoria delays to thank for it.
In a new interview for Vanity Fair's 2025 Hollywood Issue, Sydney Sweeney revealed that the constant delays for Euphoria season 3 were part of the reason she even made the movie at all.
When asked how the delays impacted her career, Sweeney was very candid, saying she was forced to pass on several projects due to the back-and-forth timeline. However, because she's also been working as a producer, she had a little more agency. “I was able to say, ‘You know what? I don’t think this is happening,'" said Sweeney. "'I’m going to put some of my own projects on the slate.’”
Enter Anyone But You, an enemies-to-lovers romance that grossed over $220 million worldwide. “Euphoria was supposed to start filming, and I had another film that I was supposed to do, but we couldn’t get cleared and after a few weeks, I realized, ‘This is not happening,'" said Sweeney. "So I put in full gear to make Anyone but You.”
Sweeney and Powell's on- and off-screen chemistry grabbed tons of headlines during the Anyone But You press run, which added to the interest in the film, but Sweeney credits its success to the fans' enthusiasm. “I felt like none of it was forced on the audience. They really fell in love with it themselves and they shared that love with everybody,” she shared. “I love that the marketing came from them.”
She and Powell did, however, lean into those rumors to fuel conversation and pique curiosity. “Once it did become a success, a lot of the interviews were just questions about it, so I don’t know if we necessarily were planning on ever talking about the strategy behind any of it,” she shared. "We just had very specific questions and when you say no to a question, people think that you’re a b*tch, so."
The two are still very good friends, though Sweeney didn't confirm if any future projects were in the works. “We definitely are very supportive of each other’s careers. We watch and talk about each other’s projects all the time, or even if we’re both debating between projects, we’ll call each other up and ask for advice,” Sweeney said of her current relationship with Powell. “I just saw him last week and we were talking through some projects, so we definitely have a really great working relationship. We would absolutely love to work on something else together.”
