Sydney Sweeney is opening up about her career choices and explaining why she feels she’s “shocked” people with the characters she’s chosen to play after having her big break with Euphoria back in 2019.
In a new interview with Variety to promote her new film Reality, in which she plays real-life former intelligence specialist Reality Winner, Sweeney took the chance to explain why she actively tries to deviate from a certain type of role, which might come as a shock to some. “There’s always people who see me as Cassie [Howard, from Euphoria] or see me as Olivia [Mossbacher from The White Lotus],” Sweeney said. “They send me scripts that are just like that. It’s the ones I have to fight for that usually are the ones that I want that are different, like Reality.”
Sweeney also shared that she had to audition for her role in Reality “just like everybody else” to prove nay-sayers wrong. “It was the same for White Lotus,” the actor added. “They didn’t think that I was right for [it] because I did Euphoria. So I put myself on tape, I auditioned for White Lotus just like everybody else and had a call back like everybody else. I could get offered roles that are similar to the ones that I’ve played, but the ones that are different, the ones that surprise people that I do, are the ones that I usually have to fight for.”
Another of said different roles on the horizon? The upcoming Anyone But You, Sweeney’s first foray into the romantic comedy territory, in which she’ll star opposite Glen Powell. “It was so much fun, honestly. We laughed every single day and the cast and the crew were just a bunch of really great people, and we all got along. It felt like summer camp. It was a great breather from everything else I’ve done,” the actor said of her first rom-com experience, teasing that she “might look for some more.”
Despite fears of being typecast, Sweeney is still looking forward to stepping into Cassie’s shoes once again when Euphoria season 3 eventually starts filming. “I just hope that I get to continue to challenge myself as an actor and get to go to crazy places through her because she’s such a crazy, dramatically heightened character, and it’s fun to play her,” the actor added. “Whatever Sam decides he wants to do with her, I fully intrust in Sam’s vision. I’m excited.” Maybe not so shocking.
