Netflix’s Tall Girl teamed up with secondhand marketplace, Depop, for the launch of the movie series’ second installment. We first met Jodi, the six-foot-one, size-13-Nike-wearing high schooler, who was just trying to find comfort in standing out. And now, our favorite Tall Girl is back and she’s owning the stage as the leading lady in the high school musical. After her inspiring speech at the homecoming dance in the first film, Ava Michelle’s character is no longer just the "tall girl."
Ava’s character spends most of the films nurturing her self-identity, and personal style is a sure way to express it. The cast teamed up with each of their own Depop stylists to create their Tall Girl 2 launch looks.
“I think that like a lot of times when we dress ourselves we kind of box ourselves into what is the normal or what might be trending and then you don't really try those different fun things,” Ava says. “Fashion is such an exciting exploration of who you are and expression of ourselves and I think we forget that sometimes.”
Griffin Gluck, who plays Jack Dunkleman and Jodi’s lovable bestie turned boyfriend, worked closely with Depop seller Christopher Juan, who was inspired by the streets of LA, specifically the outfits he saw at the flea markets. Another Depop stylist, Jamari Miller worked closely with actor Jan Luis Castellanos — who we’ll meet in the second film as Tommy Torres — and incorporated vintage preppy style with modern cuts and silhouettes. Jamari’s inspiration stemmed from a western influence but with pops of color, so he picked a serious look for Jan Luis while incorporating playful hues.
Kaamilah Thomas, a Depop shop owner, worked with Anjelika Washington, who portrayed Fareeda in the film. For Washington's look, Thomas focusd on bright colors, while keeping it fun and playful. Depop shop runner Kristina Karner worked directly with Ava Michelle for her outfits.
“I hope secondhand is becoming a big enough player within the industry to disrupt fast fashion,” Kristina says. “It’s my hope that buying secondhand will inspire people to ‘try on’ new looks. You can thrift or purchase secondhand pieces easily on Depop and experiment mixing them with pieces you are already comfortable wearing. It allows you to find that perfect vintage piece and tailor it to your body or support a small designer who makes a lifetime version of it.”
Griffin, whose style is greatly inspired by his grandfather, knows firsthand how explorative secondhand fashion is. He inherited several pieces from his grandfather, which made for more unique items in his closet.
“My advice for finding your personal style and aesthetic starts with finding an influence,” Jamari says. “I personally spend a lot of time looking at outfits in industries that come with a style, for example; skating, biking, motocross. I also spend a lot of time researching cuts, fits, and stay updated on drops from Depop sellers and brands that I like."
Navigating your personal style can be difficult and daunting, but the Depop stylists emphasize how important it is to find clothes that feel like yourself, which in turn will help build your personal aesthetic. Kaamilah mentions how important it is to follow what your heart is telling you. This will lead to a more authentic closet too.
