Though Taylor Swift and her ex-boyfriend Joe Alwyn parted ways after six years in spring 2023, speculation about their relationship hasn't died down. Until now, that is, as Swift's publicist Tree Paine is setting the record straight about a rumored secret marriage between the two.
The rumors began, as many celeb-centric rumors do, on the Instagram account DeuxMoi, which claimed that Swift and Alwyn had actually been gotten married in secret. “She DID have a ceremony in either 2020 or 2021 in the UK and it was described to me as a ‘marriage’ by more than one person,” the account wrote on Instagram Stories. “It was NEVER made legal … I'm sorry she didn't tell you guys about it in a song but just because she doesn't sing about something doesn't mean it didn't happen!!!"
Paine, who has worked with Swift for nearly a decade, shared a screenshot of the Story to her Twitter/X account and did not mince words about the gossip therein. “Enough is enough with these fabricated lies about Taylor from Deuxmoi. There was NEVER a marriage or ceremony of ANY kind,” Paine wrote. “This is an insane thing to post. It’s time for you to be held accountable for the pain and trauma you cause with posts like these.” Case = closed.
There's been increased conversation regarding Swift and Alwyn's relationship as of late because the singer made her song “You're Losing Me” streamable — a song that her longtime collaborator Jack Antonoff said was written in 2021, when Swift and Alwyn were firmly, definitely together. Though we don't know for sure if the lyrics are autobiographical, given Swift has taken on different personas in her more recent work, some of the lyrics had fans thinking there had been trouble in the Swift and Alwyn world long before their official split, including these: “And I wouldn't marry me either/A pathological people pleaser/Who only wanted you to see her."
