Fresh off the first leg of Eras, Taylor Swift has embarked on another type of tour: Going out to the most popular places in New York City with all her famous friends. This last week, those nights out included some incredible denim statement pieces, and sustainable Los Angeles-based brand EB Denim is the brand behind the looks.
After the 2023 VMAs, Taylor Swift wore a mini dress (initially worn on stage by Sabrina Carpenter) that featured a corseted top and pleated skirt. Because the dress is made from upcycled denim, each of the pleats was a different wash, ranging from light to dark blue.
“Denim has been so stagnant in the past few years, and I strongly believe that we bring a fresh approach to the category,” Elena Boncivini, the founder and creative director of EB Denim, tells Teen Vogue. “Those that get it, get it! Every aspect of the design of something like the Polka Dress is purposeful – the way it hugs every curve, flatters the body, and makes whoever is wearing it feel confident and like a star.”
Boncivini says that the dress, which is still available, is made from old pant legs. “I developed a program in which I take old discarded pant legs, sanitize them, turn them into strips of fabric, and create entirely new garments out of them,” she explains.
Later that week, on a now-infamous night out with Sophie Turner, Swift wore yet another piece from EB Denim. Perfect for the incoming season, Swift often for the brand's Webster Trench, an ankle-length denim jacket, which she styled over a mini dress and boots.
With her brand and business proudly based in Los Angeles, Boncivini is no stranger to stars wearing her pieces. EB Denim started as a thrifting business when Boncivini was still in high school in Newport Beach. She would take Levi’s she bought while visiting her grandparents in the Midwest and cut them into shorts. Eventually, she began selling them locally with her initials logo and sending them to people like Hailey Bieber and Kylie Jenner.
Getting celebs in upcycled denim wasn’t the only reason she decided to place her headquarters and manufacturing in LA – it’s part of the brand ethos too. ”I was based in L.A., so this is where I was able to fully commit my time to not only watch these designs be brought to life but also continue to learn,” she says. “It is also extremely important to me to know who is making the clothing, and be able to make sure that they are being taken care of.”
