Friday night, fans flocked by the thousands to New Yorks Madison Square Garden to see hometown favorites The Strokes. It was the bands first-ever show at the famed venue and you could feel the excitement in the air as they played to the packed house.
The five-man band opened the show with crowd-favorite Is This It, the title track from their breakthrough 2001 debut album. The set continued with hits like Reptilia from their sophomore full-length Room on Fire and the always-controversial New York City Cops. Frontman Julian Casablancas jumped down into the crowd for a few songs, and, while singing Last Nite, comically stumbled over his own lyrics. (The audience happily called out the words for him.)
At the close of the band’s main set, Elvis Costello made a guest appearance, joining the band for Taken For a Fool, a song from their recently released fourth album, Angles—and a very appropriate song title for the nights April Fools’ Day surprise. The band finished their encore with crowd-pleaser Take It or Leave It, the final song from the bands first album.
Fridays show proved that The Strokes are here to stay. Despite their recent hiatus and rumors of drama between the groups members, theyve confirmed that a fifth album is in the works. Next stop on The Strokes tour? Headlining Coachella on April 17.
