Ever since it was announced that season three of The Summer I Turned Pretty was not the end of the series and we'd be getting a The Summer I Turned Pretty movie, fans have been eagerly anticipating news about the project. So much so that the official social media account for the movie released a message requesting privacy while the movie films in North Carolina.
“We love the excitement, but sharing locations and visiting set disrupts filming and creates real safety concerns for our cast and crew,” the account posted alongside a video of Cousins Beach with “privacy please” written in the sand. “We’re working hard to create a protected bubble to make the best movie possible. Please help us protect the magic of Cousins until it’s ready to be shared. 💛”

In case you're new here, The Summer I Turned Pretty ended its third and final season with a bang. The Summer I Turned Pretty: The Movie was announced by Jenny Han herself at the special series finale celebration in Paris. With Han at the helm, Amazon MGM Studios and Prime Video have greenlit the movie, which will serve as the actual conclusion of the YA phenomenon.

When is The Summer I Turned Pretty: The Movie coming out?
Although fans are already coming up with theories and timelines, a release date—even a tentative one—has yet to be announced for The Summer I Turned Pretty movie. But there is one exciting update: According to Deadline, the movie will reportedly begin filming in Wilmington, NC, on April 27, 2026.
Speaking to NBC on September 18, 2025, Han said it was “still a little too soon to say” when the movie would come out. She also added: “We don't know when it's coming out, but not next year [2026]. We still have to make it.”
On February 26, 2026, Gavin Casalegno, who plays Jeremiah, gave a major update on the release date of the movie while talking to Joely Live on the red carpet for the 2026 Actors Rising event presented by the Actor Awards and Elle. When asked when the movie would come out, Casalegno said, “Hopefully it will be out next year.” So mark your calendars for 2027.
Specific plot details about the Summer I Turned Pretty movie are, of course, being kept under wraps, but Jenny Han did give a major tease when announcing the project. “There is another big milestone left in Belly’s journey, and I thought only a movie could give it its proper due," Han said in a statement shared by Amazon. "I’m so grateful to Prime Video for continuing to support my vision for this story and for making it possible to share this final chapter with the fans,” she continued.
The three seasons of The Summer I Turned Pretty were adapted from Han's best-selling debut trilogy, and while the series remained relatively faithful to its original source, it also introduced and omitted key details.
Though we get to see more of Belly's life abroad through the show (reminder, show Belly goes to France, while book Belly goes to Spain), it leaves out a significant part of book three, We'll Always Have Summer, which ends with an epilogue where Belly reads the letter Susannah left for her on the day of her wedding to Conrad. (Yes, the one she got in the show when she almost married Jeremiah, but didn't get to open.)
Speaking to Teen Vogue's P. Claire Dodson at the series-finale event in Paris, where the movie was later announced, Han elaborated on her decisions to leave out the beloved epilogue and forego any engagement or wedding storylines in season three, saying: “I think that, to me, this season was so much about Belly and Conrad reuniting and that's what I really wanted to focus on to really give it its proper due."
A wedding does seem like quite a significant milestone left in Belly’s journey, but Han is always full of surprises and, knowing her, it probably won't be the only thing on her mind for the movie. Lest we forget, season three also ended with Steven, Taylor, and Denise on their way to San Francisco, and Jeremiah making a vow to learn to be on his own in Boston after kissing “D-nice.” Did they try long-distance? Are they all still there? These are all questions the movie will likely also address, even if it centers on Belly's next chapter.
Speaking to Teen Vogue in November 2025, Sean Kaufman opened up about his own hopes for Steven and Taylor in The Summer I Turned Pretty: The Movie. “When the movie got announced, I was like, Oh, I wonder what story's left to be told for Steven? I had to think, and I just kept coming back to him and Taylor (played by Rain Spencer). [I'd love to see] what their relationship looks like when it's working toward being together, as opposed to staying afloat,” he said.
“I love a moment in a relationship when two people really commit to each other; the fights stop becoming ‘Are we gonna break up after this fight?’ to be 'This is a fight because we're working toward something together,'” Kaufman continued.
Who is directing The Summer I Turned Pretty: The Movie?
Jenny Han, the author of the original trilogy that the hit series is based on and the show's creator, is on board to direct the film. She has also co-penned the script with Sarah Kucserka. (ICYMI, Kucserka served as an executive producer alongside Han, as well as co-showrunner throughout seasons two and three.)
The Summer I Turned Pretty: The Movie will mark the second time Han takes the director's chair for the franchise. The creator famously made her directorial debut on episode five of season three of The Summer I Turned Pretty, titled "Last Dance." The long-anticipated episode featured Conrad's POV and the now-infamous peaches scene.
"The peaches scene was one that people had been waiting for the whole show to see," Han told USA Today about the reasoning for choosing that particular episode. "I wanted to treat it really carefully," she added. We can likely expect a similar rationale for the movie.
While working as a director, Han revealed that "even though I had written it and read it a million times, there was something new I was finding on the page every single time I looked at the script. New thoughts that I was having, like, Oh, maybe I'll do this or that. And I think that made it feel very exciting and fresh for me, like its own sort of creative wellspring."
Who is in the cast of The Summer I Turned Pretty: The Movie?
Currently, no other details are available besides Jenny Han's tease of the one “big milestone left in Belly's journey." However, based on images shared by The Summer I Turned Pretty and Prime Video's official social media accounts, it has been confirmed that Lola Tung and Christopher Briney will return to reprise their roles as Belly Conklin and Conrad Fisher, respectively.
Aside from posing on their own, Tung and Briney posed alongside Gavin Casalegno, who plays Jeremiah, in front of the movie marquee, so it's safe to assume that he, with the rest of the core cast, will be returning for the film. As for new cast additions or the return of season three's new faces, we'll wait for confirmation from Amazon.
How far along in production is The Summer I Turned Pretty: The Movie?
In an NBC interview from September 2025, Han revealed that she and Kucserka had already completed a first draft of the script, and as of December, it appeared The Summer I Turned Pretty: The Movie formally had an official script.
During a panel at The Wrap's 2025 Power Women Summit on December 2, Han confirmed the script was ready—but the film wouldn't arrive anytime soon. “I just wrote it," she said. “I know that everyone was hoping it was coming out this Christmas, but unfortunately, [that's] not happening, not possible."
Han also took the chance to dispel any rumors that they had shot the film concurrently with season three. “We have not filmed anything yet,” she confirmed. She also added a little bit of context for how long it takes a project of this scale to go from the page to the screen. While most of the filming for season three took place in 2024, Han revealed, the show was in post-production right down to the wire: “We were still in post up until June, and the show came out in July.”
As for when the movie could begin filming, that remains to be seen. On December 16, Lola Tung debuted a darker hairstyle, prompting speculation that she could be back in Belly's shoes. But nothing has been confirmed by Amazon, and given the actor's busy schedule, we highly doubt it.
ICYMI, Tung has quite a few projects coming up, including Forbidden Fruits and The Young People, with Nico Parker, Johnny Knoxville, Lily Collias, Lexi Minetree, and more; both of which will likely feature a press tour.
As of March, it appears Chris Briney is busy filming another Prime Video project: a Christmas movie titled Clashing Through the Snow alongside Scream 7 alum Michelle Randolph. The movie is being directed by Upgraded's Carlson Young. The project was penned by Love Hard's Daniel Mackey and Rebecca Ewing.
While we don't know when the movie cameras will begin rolling, Han did spill some beans about the direction the movie will take to The Wrap, saying she's going for classic '90s rom-com vibes, citing Nora Ephron’s Sleepless in Seattle, and You’ve Got Mail, as well as Bridget Jones’s Diary as inspirations. “I’m having a lot of fun right now, just thinking and planning,” she added.
Will The Summer I Turned Pretty: The Movie be the end of the franchise?
Amazon MGM has confirmed that the upcoming The Summer I Turned Pretty movie “is set to conclude its story” of the global hit series, but that likely just means Belly's story.
After all, the streamer has always described the show as a “multigenerational drama” that centers on “the complex bonds between mothers and their children, the strength of lasting female friendships, and the transformative journey of growing up.”
While the announcement of the movie is keeping fans going for now, there's also chatter about more potential for The Summer I Turned Pretty spinoffs, specifically one focused on the backstory of Laurel and Susannah. When previously asked about the possibility of exploring that story, Han told Teen Vogue, “Never say never.”
“I'd love to see how Laurel's Adam became Susannah's Adam,” Jackie Chung, who plays Belly's mom Laurel, also told Teen Vogue. In the books it's mentioned that Adam dated Laurel first before getting with Susannah. “I'm curious how they all started out,” Chung continued. “I guess it could be parallel in a way.”
Back in 2023, Vernon Sanders, global head of television at Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios, had already said: “This show is going to continue to be a huge centerpiece for us, and we absolutely have plans to continue building it. Jenny’s got great vision for where she wants to go with all of it, but we’re already hard at work developing complementary pieces." Notice the use of the plural there…
