On Saturday, September 6, several thousand protesters took to the streets in Washington, DC, and Chicago in response to the Trump administration's ICE policies, deployment of the National Guard to the former, and threat of deployment to the latter.
Protesters traveled to DC from out of town to join the “We Are All DC” march, coordinated in part by the community organization Free DC and the American Civil Liberties Union, in what the Washington Post called “one of the first major organized protests since President Donald Trump deployed federal troops to the nation’s capital.”
There have been over 2,000 National Guard troops deployed in DC from other states, and it is unclear when they will leave, according to Reuters. Last week, DC's attorney general filed a lawsuit against the National Guard deployment. Protesters held signs calling for an “end to the occupation” of the city.
In Illinois, protesters have been gathering at the Broadview ICE Detention Center outside Chicago, where, on Saturday, Trump threatened to send in his “Department of War” via Truth Social. The protests in both locations were also against Trump's deployment of ICE agents into American cities.
Trump has threatened to send the National Guard into other US cities, including New Orleans and Portland. “It’s going to happen to Detroit. It’s going to happen again to Los Angeles. It’s going to happen to Philly,” Joshua Armstead, vice president of labor union Unite Here Local 23, told the Washington Post. “This is an attack on not just DC, but the country, and the citizens and the people living in this country.”
