In a turn that takes wishful thinking straight into delulu-land, former President Donald Trump seems to suggest that pop music juggernaut Taylor Swift has “endorsed” his candidacy.
“I accept!” Trump posted on his social media platform Truth Social on Sunday, along with a collage of AI-generated screenshots and memes of Swifties expressing their support for the Republican presidential nominee. At least one image appears to be real. According to a post from Wisconsin Right Now, the picture depicts 19-year-old Jenna Piwowarczyk in the homemade shirt at a Trump rally in Wisconsin in June.
The thing is, Taylor Swift has not officially endorsed any candidate in the 2024 election.
Back in August of 2020, Swift celebrated the nomination of Kamala Harris as Vice President. With an all-caps “YES,” Swift retweeted Harris’ message announcing she’d joined Biden as the Democratic nominee for Vice President. Eagle-eyed Swifties have recently pointed to this message ahead of what they see as a potential Harris endorsement ahead of the 2024 election.
An unofficial Swifties 4 Kamala account created in July, has over 61,000 followers on X and over 110,000 on TikTok, but there is no significant movement or social presence for a Republican or Trump-related version of grassroots Swiftie organizing.
In another Truth Social post on Sunday, Trump reshared a TikTok video of a woman claiming that Swifties were now “rallying for Trump” after the singer’s Vienna concert was canceled out of concern over a terrorist plot.
Trump has spoken about Swift before, he’s been quoted in the book Apprentice in Wonderland: How Donald Trump and Mark Burnett Took America Through the Looking Glass as saying: “I think she’s liberal. She probably doesn’t like Trump. I hear she’s very talented. I think she’s very beautiful, actually—unusually beautiful!” As for her politics, Trump seems to continue to believe that she could secretly be supporting him. “But she is liberal, or is that just an act?” he continues in the book. “She’s legitimately liberal? It’s not an act? It surprises me that a country star can be successful being liberal.”
Trump is no stranger to disseminating AI-generated content, his post featuring Taylor Swift AI-generated images comes just days after he and X platform owner Elon Musk shared a faked video of the two dancing together after their joint livestream on X.
