Singer-songwriter Matthew Mayfield took a DIY approach to his latest album, Now You’re Free. To raise money to record it, he sold handwritten lyrics, studio artifacts and drumheads. (He even threw a few house parties.) Now You’re Free, recorded in Nashville, is Matthew’s first full-length studio album.
The Alabama-born performer, who has toured with the Civil Wars, Blue October and Switchfoot, has a soft, rugged voice and writes songs that manage to be both intimate and vast. (You’ve probably heard one or two on Grey’s Anatomy.) If you’re looking for a sonic comparison, imagine Pete Yorn’s vocals on songs that were co-written by Counting Crows and Augustana.
