Warning: this post contains major spoilers for We Were Liars season one.

If you finished all episodes of Prime Video's We Were Liars already and can't stop thinking about the show's future after that shocking ending, you are not alone.

Based on E. Lockhart's 2014 bestselling novel of the same name and featuring the original author as both a writer and producer, We Were Liars is Prime Video's latest bet on the YA territory, following the success of Jenny Han's The Summer I Turned Pretty.

The first eight-episode season of We Were Liars follows the story of “The Liars,” led by Cadence “Cady” Sinclair Eastman (played by Gossip Girl alum Emily Alyn Lind), alongside her cousins and her best friend turned lover Gat (Shubham Maheshwari), the nephew of her aunt’s longtime partner. The show focuses on the Sinclairs' lavish summer at Beechwood Island, just off the coast of Martha's Vineyard, with more than one mystery to boot.

If you are dying to know how the story continues, keep reading for everything we know about We Were Liars season two.

🚨 MAJOR SPOILERS BELOW 🚨

Season one of We Were Liars covers the events of two summers. In the first one, Cady returns to Beechwood Island to reunite with her cousins and realizes she has a crush on her best friend, Gat. Things soon turn steamy; however, Cady also suffers a mysterious accident that leaves her with memory loss.

The following summer, Cady returns to the island, determined to piece together the missing parts that led to her accident and to reunite with the Liars after a year of no contact, but no one is willing to answer her questions.

In the final episode of the season, it is revealed that all of the Liars, minus Cady, had actually died the summer prior in a fire that burned down their beloved mansion, and our titular girl had been interacting with their ghosts this whole time.

The show ends on a cliffhanger as most of the Liars accept their fate, but Johnny Sinclair (Joseph Zada) is determined to haunt his mom Carrie (Mamie Gummer), who can also see his ghost form. The show finished with Cady running down the beach, seemingly leaving her family behind.

Yes! Prime Video officially renewed We Were Liars for a second season on September 17, 2025, as noted by Deadline. Prior to the show's renewal, Vernon Sanders, the head of TV at Amazon MGM Studios, confirmed to Variety that a writers' room for season two of We Were Liars was already underway.

“We are working with the writers of We Were Liars on a second season writers' room right now,” Sanders told the publication on July 28. 2025. “We haven’t announced the renewal quite yet, but we’re excited by the results we’ve seen of that show.”

In just days since the first season's premiere, We Were Liars reached Prime Video's Top 10 shows list, claiming the top spot in over 20 countries. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter in June 2025, E. Lockhart hinted at the future of the show, saying, "I don’t have any news to share about season two yet. [But] it’s not a limited series!"

Speaking to Teen Vogue, Lind also teased that there's more to explore with Cady. “There's things that he can use over me for the rest of my life,” she said. "People died. That's a lot of baggage that she's leaving with. She's not leaving with her hands clean. Her hands have never been dirtier. None of her family knows.”

What will We Were Liars season 2 be about?

The official logline for We Were Liars season two is as follows: “In an effort to confront her truth, Cadence returns to Beechwood. As she digs deeper into family secrets, she learns about the Sinclair Sisters' summer of 1999—a summer rife with first love, rivalry, and even murder. In flashbacks, we see Carrie, Penny, and Bess navigate their own teenage summer, as they come to terms with their past in the present day.”

Speaking to TVLine, E. Lockhart teased that season two would delve into the events of her 2022 sequel, Family of Liars, which follows the older Sinclair sisters as teenagers in the late '80s.

“That final scene with Carrie and Johnny is very close to the opening of my second book in the We Were Liars universe,” she told the outlet. “Really, it’s a tip forward into season two […] but it’s also a tip forward to the book that comes after We Were Liars.

Speaking to Deadline, she added: “If you watch We Were Liars all the way til the end, and you watch the little coda, you can see that that coda tips to the start of Family of Liars. We have not forgotten about what’s going on with Johnny and Carrie.”

Julie Plec, who co-wrote, co-exec-produced, and served as co-showrunner on season one, told Deadline that season two will “theoretically” take fans “deeper into the moms’ lives as well and add another generation to the story.” So, yes, we are going back in time, but it seems we will focus more on the '90s rather than the '80s.

Speaking to Variety, Lind also teased that season two could focus on her journey after the events of season one. “In life, a lot of people will pack up and leave their families, but that doesn’t mean they don’t bring baggage with them and secrets. So we will see, maybe season two will dive into that a little bit. I think the story hasn’t quite ended there,” she said.

Lockhart also has said that the showrunners “have big, big plans for season two, including everything readers of my books are dying to see onscreen—and a lot of surprises as well.”

Who is in the cast of We Were Liars season 2?

While it's safe to assume that Emily Alyn Lind will be reprising her role as Cadence “Cady” Sinclair Eastman in season two, seeing as it is confirmed that we will see her return to Beechwood, Prime Video has yet to explicitly announce her return or that of any other returning stars, for that matter. If the show will again mix timelines, we'll most likely see most of the Sinclair family at some point, but it's best to wait for official confirmation.

That said, the cast of We Were Liars season two is shaping up quite nicely, with a bunch of new faces joining in to tell the story of the Sinclair Sisters in the ‘90s. Here’s everyone joining the show so far and what we know about their character:

Josh Dallas is young Harris

Josh Dallas (Manifest) will play young Harris, the patriarch of the family, played by David Morse in season one. In the 1999 timeline, Harris is described as “charming, well-heeled, and dedicated to raising his daughters to honor the family name” as well as “a hard worker, a loyal husband, and stoic in the face of crisis.” His description also teases that “despite already having command of a media empire, Harris often finds himself cast in the shadow of his even more charming—and far more reckless—older brother, the only person standing in the way of the future he envisions.”

Peyton List is young Tipper

Peyton List (not to be confused with Peyton List from School Spirits) will portray the matriarch of the Sinclair family, Tipper Sinclair, in the 1999 timeline, who was played by Wendy Crewson in season one. List’s previous roles include Star Trek: Picard, The Rookie, Charmed, and Gotham, among many others. Her character in the show is described as a “young matriarch of a Kennedy-esque dynasty.” It continues: “Tipper can bake a perfect pie, host the hell out of a dinner party, and deftly pull the strings in her husband’s quest for more wealth and power. She’s always done it all with effortless grace and old-money elegance – but this year, a family crisis exposes her sharp edges, her icy temper, and her dirty little secrets.”

Costa D’Angelo is Pfeff

Costa D’Angelo, whom you might recognize from the final season of Tell Me Lies and will soon appear in East of Eden, is playing Pfeff. Pfeff is “a New England college kid with a mysterious edge.” The character is described as “observant, soulful, and wounded in the most compelling way.” We also get a tease that “when he shows up on Beechwood Island, he doesn't really intend to upend the Sinclair sisters' lives—but it’s an inevitability.”

Parker Lapaine is young Carrie

Parker Lapaine (House of the Dragon) will portray a young version of Johnny’s mother, Carrie Sinclair, portrayed by Mamie Gummer in season one during the present-day timeline. “In the summer of 1999, Carrie is sensitive, quick-witted, and yearning to be loved. Ostensibly, she is the Harvard-bound, well-heeled, obedient eldest daughter… until an intriguing new boy arrives on the island, and tempts her with a very different kind of future,” her character description reads.

Elysia Roorbach is young Penny

Tisch School of the Arts alum Elysia Roorbach, whom you might have seen on season two of The Pitt, is joining season two as young Penny, portrayed by Caitlin FitzGerald in season one. “With a competitive streak a mile wide, Penny is charming, popular, and a hopeless romantic—for now, anyway,” her character description reads. “She deftly hides her struggles with her body image and a burgeoning panic disorder hidden from everyone, until someone unexpected sees beyond her ‘Perfect Penny’ mask.” Who could it be?

Madison Wolfe is young Bess

Madison Wolfe (The Hunting Wives, True Detective) will portray young Bess, played by Candice King in season one. “The summer she turns 16, Bess dreams of being a songwriter, an adventurer, and most importantly… nothing like her mother,” her description teases. “Desperate to fit in with the older kids, especially the three college-age boys who have unexpectedly moved into the guest house, Bess will do anything to impress them… including some things she’ll live to regret.” Mysteries abound with this family!
