The first of the Wicked movies is only a few months away, and there's one thing we are all eagerly anticipating: Ariana Grande's take on “Popular.” And, unexpectedly, thanks to toymaker Mattel, we have gotten a more than generous peek!
For months, the cast and crew of the Wicked movies have been slowly but surely releasing a constant stream of content for us to enjoy as we eagerly await the first film to arrive on November 22, 2024. So far, we've gotten two behind-the-scenes featurettes and two trailers, both giving us a peek at Cynthia Erivo's version of Elphaha's signature song “Defying Gravity.” However, aside from a very small snippet in the full-length trailer, Ariana Grande's take on Glinda's uber-popular “Popular” has been kept under wraps… until now.
On July 31, 2024, Mattel first introduced the upcoming Barbie dolls for Erivo's Elphaba and Grande's Glinda with a video posted to Instagram. In the video, which was taken during this year’s CinemaCon in April, the two stars meet their doll versions for the first time, and, of course, they sing.

While Erivo's “Defying Gravity” plays freely in the clip of the two actors playing with the dolls, once Grande's “Popular” starts playing, the clip cuts to the next frame, only giving fans a chance to listen to a few seconds of the song.
However, fans have noticed a much longer snippet of the song was posted on Mattel's official website promoting Grande's doll, where a 25-second clip of the song was posted to sell the singing Glinda doll. (The video seems to have been removed from Mattel's website, but it's been circulating on social media, so you can still listen to it here.)
If you were worrying about the element of surprise being gone now that we've gotten a generous peek at “Popular,” don't because may we remind you that the Wicked movies will feature all-new musical material? Is it November already?
