Warning: This post contains major plot spoilers for Young Sherlock season 1.

If you've missed seeing Hero Fiennes Tiffin on your screen consistently since the After movies ended in 2023, chances are you've already watched Prime Video's Young Sherlock. And if you've already watched Prime Video's Young Sherlock, chances are you are wondering whether there will be a season two—and we have good news.

Executive-produced by British filmmaker Guy Ritchie and with Matthew Parkhill as showrunner, Young Sherlock debuted on March 4, 2026, to popular and critical acclaim. Before its premiere, the trailer reportedly became Prime Video's most-watched series trailer in a week. According to Amazon MGM Studios, the show became the number one show on Prime Video worldwide just days after its debut.

And what he learned from working with his uncle, Joseph Fiennes.

Filmed between the UK and Spain, the project marked the reunion of Fiennes Tiffin and Ritchie, who previously worked together on 2024's The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare. The show follows 19-year-old Sherlock Holmes (played by Fiennes Tiffin) wreaking havoc through the corridors and halls of Oxford University as the first mysteries unfold, and the season finale left us with even more questions.

Yes, Young Sherlock has officially been renewed for a second season. Variety confirmed the renewal in mid-April 2025.

Young Sherlock has that rare magic—millions of fans around the world aren’t just watching a detective story, they’re falling in love with the origin of an icon,” Peter Friedlander, head of global television for Amazon MGM Studios, told the publication. “Guy Ritchie and Matthew Parkhill have cracked the code on making Sherlock’s early years feel fresh, dangerous, and utterly addictive, and have introduced a compelling take on James Moriarty that sets the stage for what’s to come. We can’t wait to see where they take him next in season two.”

Given the general public's interest in the show and the positive critical reviews, a renewal seemed imminent from the get-go.

Speaking to Deadline about the future of the show, executive producer Simon Maxwell said, “We know that in terms of the origin and coming-of-age story, we’ve just told the first stage. It is absolutely designed to be a multi-season show."

Maxwell continued saying the hope was to “track the journeys that each of these characters are going to go on." He added, "By bringing Sherlock and Moriarty into the same frame, and positioning them as friends, what you’re implicitly promising the audience is that you’re going to show them how they become enemies.”

Maxwell also shared that “the core team” is on board for season two, and they are “in the early stages of prep.” He added, "We’ve all worked together, obviously driven by Matthew [Parkhill, the show's writer and showrunner], to build the story for a season two. The intention is very much for Guy to come back and kick it off again with us.” Variety later confirmed that Guy Ritchie will return to direct the first episode of season two.

If you want to avoid major spoilers, we suggest you skip this section.

If you've watched season one, you'd know it ends on quite the cliffhanger. By the end of the episode, Sherlock deciphers the secret to the honeycomb handkerchief his father left behind when he jumped to his death, discovering a mysterious (and rather large) key in front of his brother Mycroft. Though Sherlock puts the key back as his older brother advised, we later learn he returns to retrieve it and flashes it at Moriarty.

Moriarty's arc also gets pretty interesting by the end of season one. While Sherlock, his family, and Xiao Wei are working to destroy Silas' secret gas factory in Afshin, he's working hard to retrieve the missing piece from Professor Malik's equation, under the pretense of having the key clue to creating an antidote for the mortal gas if there's ever a need for one—though he previously teased more selfish purposes. Just as Moriarty knows about the key, Sherlock also knows Moriarty has secured the complete equation.

Speaking to Deadline, executive producer Simon Maxwell teased Moriarty's potential future arc. “The foundations of the conflict [with Holmes] and the first fault lines in the relationship start to emerge in a really organic way. We see the first flicker of a darker criminal psychology, something that could even become, ultimately, sociopathy," he said.

So, when season two arrives, expect those mysteries to be resolved, and, hopefully, more of that tension between the two partners in crime.

Prime Video's Young Sherlock stars Hero Fiennes Tiffin as 19-year-old Sherlock Holmes, and he is already confirmed to return for the show's second season. Though nothing has been confirmed, Dónal Finn will also more than likely reprise his role as James Moriarty, Holmes's future archrival.

Others expected to return include Natascha McElhone (Californication, The Truman Show, Halo) as Holmes's mother, Cordelia Holmes; Max Irons (Red Riding Hood, Dorian Gray) as Sherlock's older brother, Mycroft Holmes; and Holly Cattle (Rivals) as Beatrice Holmes.

We are less sure about the return of Zine Tseng, who plays Princess Gulun Shou'an, later revealed to be Xiao Wei. While she was one of season one's leads, the character's story does wrap up quite nicely. Does that mean her path won't cross with Sherlock anymore? We would be so sure!

Other cast members that likely won't return are Colin Firth as Sir Bucephalus Hodge and Fiennes's own uncle, Joseph Fiennes, whom you might recognize from The Handmaid's Tale or 1998's Shakespeare in Love, as Sherlock Holmes's father, Silas Holmes. (Yes, Joseph is the brother of Hero's other uncle, Ralph Fiennes, whom you probably remember as Voldemort in the Harry Potter film saga, among many other projects.) These two met their maker in season one, though flashbacks are always an option and, well, we technically didn't see Silas's corpse, so…
