The Best Show Moments from NYFW 2019
Hello, hi! I'd like to officially welcome you to New York Fashion Week, one of the holiest weeks in the fashion industry. From the runways to the streets and even backstage at the shows, over the next week the Teen Vogue style team will running around Manhattan in stylish fits AND rounding up the very best moments from the weirdest to the coolest to the most important to give you an inside view into all the amazingness that is NYFW. With the perpetual doom and gloom mood lately thanks to the climate crisis and politics, we're expecting to see a lot of experimentation and cheeky designs this season that not only draw attention to the state of the world but also inspire us to have fun with our clothes.

Amongst a sea of fire looks that included denim and blazers with Hawaiian flowers, orange hoodies paired with long skirts, flame and animal print everything, and incredible patchwork pieces, a model in head-to-toe turquoise body glitter appeared at the Gypsy Sport Spring Summer 2020 runway show. The model looked like a sparkly alien or character from the Avatar movies, making us literally stop in our tracks. On top of the body glitter she wore thong underwear and a mesh dress with platform sandals plus a chic purse and earrings.
What was even more incredible about this look? The glitter is biodegradable! Made from algae, the glitter came courtesy of a company called Bioglitz. Thanks to Gypsy Sport, we’re predicting full body glitter looks to make it big during the next festival season.

On Monday afternoon in a well-lit space with gorgeous views of the Hudson River, rising fashion star Sandy Liang showed her Spring Summer 2020 collection to a stylish crowd of Sandy stans. Showgoers sat on rolls of pink insulation covered with neon green plastic while glass cases displayed what appeared to be the designer’s inspiration for the collection including a set of Sailor Moon toys, nostalgic hair clips and jewelry pieces, and the soundtrack CD to the 2006 Marie Antoinette movie directed by Sofia Coppola.
In true Sandy style, the clothes were equal parts cool and cute. There were pink gingham skirts and dresses, ruffled and ruched see-through pieces, daisy printed biker shorts and pedal pushers, and canvas totes. There were chic breakaway pants, cozy outerwear pieces, and a holographic, checker print mini dress we think Charli XCX or Marsai Martin might wear. The models also wore multiple tiny hair bows, necklaces with heart charms, Vans sneakers, and silver metallic eyeshadow. But what did we love the most? The Sailor Moon and SpongeBob references of course, which appeared on graphic tees. We’re obsessed with the way Sandy made SpongeBob her own by dressing the cartoon characters in iconic Sandy Liang outerwear pieces. Hello, I need this tee ASAP!

For Prabal Gurung’s 10th Anniversary collections he asked the important question: Who gets to be American? A question that in today’s climate keeps getting questioned over and over again, based on where your were born or the color of your skin. In this NYFW Spring 2020 show, the designer reimagined classic Americana style like the cotton poplin shirt and jeans. The show ended with every model walking the finale with a sash, reading “Who agents to be American?”. In a press release for the collection, Gurung says “AMERICA IS THE SUM OF MANY IDEALS, FACES, IDENTITIES, AND OPINIONS. HERE WE FEEL IT WITH ALL OF OUR SENSES.”

Whether through nostalgia trends or not, clothes are also a source of escapism. And on Saturday morning, Kate Spade attendees were able to escape the city buzz by immersing themselves in Nicola Glass’ third collection as Kate Spade’s, Creative Director. The Spring Summer 2020 collection was held in NYC’s, Elizabeth Street Garden which served as the perfect venue for all the quaint pastel, knit dresses, floral print suit sets, and silk scarves worn as belts that walked through the pebbled-filled floor.
However, what stood out the most, was the accessory of choice: Plants. From some models carrying monstera plants as big as their bodies to other sporting vases filled with lilies, Kate Spade’s S/S 20 collection wants us to channel our inner plant ladies. So, if you’re not blessed with a green thumb, you have 6 whole months until next spring to cultivate it and get on this next level go green or go home trend.

Last night, Jeremy Scott took us back to the future with massive wigs, 80s prom dresses, acid wash denim, and exaggerated shoulders for his Spring Summer 2020 runway show. With perfectly crafted silhouettes and details, one could describe the show as a little bit Zenon: Girl of the 21st Century meets Saved By The Bell. There was a lot of ruffled dresses, neon bodysuits, colored metallics, and some vibrant prints including Hawaiian, zebra, and a flame pattern that immediately brought to my mind the 1989 Billy Joel song, “We Didn’t Start The Fire”.
While this collection wasn’t necessarily as over the top as his previous ones, in true Jeremy Scott style the clothes still seemed to say “wear us as show pieces and you’ll most definitely stand out”. This was particularly true for three pieces that caught my eye — a one shoulder dress, a body suit, and a jacket and pants look, all of which featured fishnet material and a patchwork of multicolored thong underwear. I mean, why wear your underwear under your clothes when you can wear them outside of it as an actual outfit?!
The mishmash of thongs looked both cheap and chic, as if they had been hand selected from the discount bin at Victoria’s Secret circa the 1990s, and honestly I was into it. I mean I can definitely see some of our favorite stars, like Lizzo or Charli XCX, wearing one of these looks next year to the MTV Movie Awards or VMAS. Plus, as Rowan Blanchard told us earlier this week, G-strings seem to be making a comeback. Though I personally tend to prefer full briefed underwear because comfort is key, these looks have me delightfully excited for the flashy thong’s return and I will fully support any and all who don this look.
