ICYMI, Lil Nas X hit the red carpet at the 2021 MTV VMAs looking absolutely resplendent in a pastel purple Atelier Versace suit-cape-gown hybrid that threw it back to iconic looks by Prince. But it seemed like one interviewer maybe wasn't so obsessed with the big red carpet moment — and Lil Nas's fans had his back.
Interviewer Jamila Mustafa was chatting with Nas on the red carpet before the VMAs. "I'm happy. I look good," Nas told her as they chatted about his lavender look. "Listen, I'm not gonna say I'm hating on the 'fit, but let's move on, OK?" Mustafa replied. Lil Nas X appeared to laugh it off, and the short context of the viral clip makes it hard to see the full context behind their convo. Regardless of Mustafa's intentions, Nas's fans came to his defense right away.

"Listen, I’m not gonna say I’m hating on the interviewer but let’s make this clear… @LilNasX is so important and when you approach him you better realize that. You also better realize no matter what he chooses to wear, he’s gonna wear it better than you ever could," tweeted a fan. "Lil Nas X is sooo nice cause we definitely woulda been arguing for the rest of the interview," tweeted another. "I know that interviewer did not just say that about Lil Nas X’s outfit…. Girl what the hell is YOU wearing ???," wrote another.
In true Lil Nas X fashion, the exchange quickly became a meme, too, with Twitter users comparing the exchange to The Devil Wears Prada and the Real Housewives. Whether or not the interviewer was actually dissing the outfit in question or not, we know two things for sure: Lil Nas X always brings it on the red carpet, and, just like he does, his fans are always going to find the meme in everything.
