Moschino’s Marie Antoinette–Inspired Show Was a Fashion Feast

No one does a fashion show quite like Moschino and its latest one is the perfect proof.

On February 20, the fashion house, helmed by Jeremy Scott, debuted its fall 2020 ready-to-wear show during Milan Fashion Week and it didn't disappoint. For the show, the designer brought back none other than Marie Antoinette, though Scott prefers to call his version "Anime Antoinette." And that's because the infamous French queen's penchant for candy colors, large skirt panniers, intricate embroidery, and towering hairstyles got a Tokyo twist.

The Marie Antoinette motif carried through the entire show, from denim suits emblazoned with royal golden embroidery to white floral minidresses that looked like a cross between the costumes in Little Women and what Scott's "Anime Antoinette" would wear today — with matching pink lace-up thigh-high boots, of course.

There were romantic blue toile prints, a delicious mint green striped suit fit for a prince or a princess, and printed moto jackets to wear over your full skirt. Models like Kaia Gerber, Irina Shayk, and both Bella and Gigi Hadid walked the runway in Moschino's grand styles, each rocking the huge, curled hairstyles the teenage queen of France made famous. If this show means that pastels and ruffles are in for fall, we're here for it.

Scott even got in a sly "let them eat cake" joke toward the end of the show; the breathtaking finale gowns looked just like the confectionary treats with their tiers of ruffles. While his show was a message about how the political unrest across the globe mirrors that of the French Revolution, Scott told Vogue that he wanted the designs to make people happy. “All I can do is offer respite," he said. "Even if you continue to fight, you need that moment of joy. We all need something uplifting. My role on this earth has only ever been to spread joy and bring happiness.”
