Warning: This post contains spoilers for seasons one and two of Netflix's One Piece and the anime show.

Adapting beloved manga and anime stories to a live-action format is no easy feat, but Netflix seems to have struck gold with One Piece.

Based on the original tale by Eiichiro Oda, who is also involved in the live-action series as an executive producer, One Piece follows the story of a young pirate named Monkey D. Luffy (played by Iñaki Godoy) who grew up dreaming of being a pirate and acquired supernatural elasticity (and a quasi-mortal weakness to water) after eating a devil fruit in his childhood. Now he's determined to become the King of the Pirates and find Gol D. Roger's long-lost treasure, the One Piece.

The first season of Netflix's One Piece introduced us to Luffy as he recruited the first members of the Straw Hat Pirates—namely Zoro, Nami, Usopp, and Sanji—and it was a faithful adaptation of the manga and anime's initial chapters, enthralling audiences worldwide. Season two featured the crew sailing into the Grand Line and visiting Reverse Mountain, Whisky Peak, Little Garden, Drum Island (a.k.a. Chopper's native land), and added some new cast members on the way.

When it premiered in summer 2023, Netflix's live-action adaptation of One Piece took the world by storm. The show amassed almost 40 million views in less than two weeks, which made it the number one TV title globally on the platform upon its release. It also spent a whopping eight weeks on Netflix's Global Top 10, debuting at number one in 46 regions.

Suffice it to say, expectations were very high going into season two, and merely a day after its release, the series boasted a “100% fresh” score on Rotten Tomatoes. All eyes are now on season three to keep the streak going.

If you have already watched season two in full and don't want to miss an update on the future of One Piece, below we've gathered everything we know about season three—including firsthand intel from some of the actors.

Netflix confirmed One Piece season three at the end of the first-look teaser for season two, although the sophomore season did not even have a premiere date at the time. “Season three sets sail soon,” the streamer announced in August 2025.

Netflix also confirmed some changes for season three. First, Ian Stokes is set to join Joe Tracz as co-showrunner, writer, and executive producer. Tracz worked as showrunner alongside Matt Owens for season two. Owens, who also served as showrunner during season one with Steven Maeda, announced his departure from the show in March 2025.

What is One Piece season 3 called?

One Piece season three is officially titled One Piece: The Battle of Alabasta, named after the saga it will adapt (more on that below). The first season of One Piece did not feature a sub-title, but season two was called One Piece: Into the Grand Line.

As of this writing, Netflix has not shared a specific release date for One Piece season three, but we know the show will premiere sometime in 2027. Season two came out on March 10, 2026, more than a year after filming had wrapped. Taking that into account, perhaps it's safest not to expect season three until at least mid-2027.

Are there any first-look photos from One Piece season 3?

Netflix has released just one first-look production photo so far: It is the picture of a script in the desert sand, with a couple of props that manga and anime fans will surely recognize. The image (below) teases the title of the first episode of season three, “Where There's Smoke.” The episode was written by Ashley Wigfield and directed by Christoph Schrewe.

Netflix's live-action One Piece stars Iñaki Godoy as Monkey D. Luffy, Mackenyu as Roronoa Zoro, Emily Rudd as Nami, Jacob Romero as Usopp, and Taz Skylar as Sanji. During season two, the initial five added a couple of members to the Straw Hat crew: Nefertari Vivi, played by Charithra Chandran; and their new resident doctor, Tony Tony Chopper, voiced by Mikaela Hoover.

As Chandran previously told Teen Vogue, it takes a village to bring Tony Tony Chopper to life. Hoover does face-capture and voice acting for the character, while Gavin Gomes acts as Heavy Point, and N’kone Mametja serves as a stand-in. Tim Redpath has also joined the team as a puppeteer for Chopper during season three.

While season two introduced plenty of other characters as Baroque Works members, most will likely not appear in season three. But two who will for sure appear are Joe Manganiello as Mr. 0, who was revealed to be the pirate Crocodile by the end of the second season, and Lera Abova as Miss All Sunday, whose real identity as Nico Robin was also revealed.

Sendhil Ramamurthy, who joined the cast in season two as Nefertari Cobra, the king of Alabasta and father of Vivi, will also play a major role in season three. In fact, Netflix has already confirmed that Hoover, Manganiello, Abova, and Ramamurthy have all been upped to series regulars for the third season.

Callum Kerr and Julia Rehwald are also expected to reprise their roles as Smoker and Tashigi, characters we left en route to Alabasta. And, of course, new faces will also join the cast.

Slowly but surely, Netflix has been announcing the first cast additions for season three. Actor, comedian, and playwright Cole Escola was named as “theatrical assassin” Bon Clay, who is described as being “as dangerous as they are dazzling.”

After much anticipation, Cobra Kai alum Xolo Maridueña was also announced as Portgas D. Ace, a.k.a. Luffy's brother. The actor announced the news with a video chatting to Godoy via Den Den Mushi.

“He’s a great guy. He’s a really good friend, and he’s also a super-talented person," Godoy previously told Teen Vogue of Maridueña. “He has been in this also for a long time, and he's a very educated actor, and getting to work with someone like him has been really incredible. We have really good chemistry that I'm excited for people to see. And he's also just my friend, so being able to work with your friend is such a privilege. We have a special trust, and I think it's going to show onscreen.”

Other season-three cast members include Awdo Awdo as Mr. 1 and Daisy Head as Miss Doublefinger. Additional casting will be revealed at a later date.

Recurring characters are also expected to appear in the third season, including Morgan Davies as Koby, Aidan Scott as Helmeppo, Vincent Regan as Vice-Admiral Garp, Peter Gadiot as Shanks, and Outer Banks alum Rigo Sanchez as Dragon, among others.

Season two gave fans two big Easter eggs with the early introductions of Sabo, as well as Brook (played by Martial T. Batchamen), and the Rumbar Pirates, led by Calico Yorki (Richard Gau). Both Sabo and Brook are major characters in Oda's work; however, they don't appear until much later in both the manga and the anime, so, if their early cameos have taught us anything, it is to always expect the unexpected with the live-action version.

In an interview with IGN, showrunner Joe Tracz teased that we will be seeing Karoo, Vivi's loyal duck companion, in season three. Tracz explained that the character was originally scheduled to appear in season two but was ultimately cut.

It's no secret that the show's third installment will delve fully into the Alabasta Arc, with Vivi in the eye of the hurricane. We leave the Straw Hats in season two on their way to Vivi's homeland, resolute on defeating Baroque Works and saving the kingdom alongside her.

“It is a very dramatic turn,” Chandran previously told Teen Vogue of season three. “I think it's the most serious season so far, and you see a more mature side to both [Vivi and Luffy]. It still has all of the classic things of One Piece, but I think that you see Vivi and Luffy really discussing and engaging with very important, serious matters. Season two is so fun and joyful; it's nice to see that contrast in season three. [There’s] a lot of allegories for what's happening around the world in different places.”

Godoy has also said that the tone will shift in season three, and one way fans will notice is through the fights. “There's so much storytelling in fighting,” he noted, teasing that the fight between Luffy and Wapol in the season-two finale is “very different to what we are going to see for Luffy in season three.” He added: “In my head I always knew I wanted to give that fight a specific tone, so it would feel different to what we're doing now.”

The show's co-showrunners, Joe Tracz and Ian Stokes, also gave a statement about season three to Netflix. “The Alabasta saga is one of the best-loved stories in all of One Piece—and one of our personal favorite arcs—so it's a huge honor to bring it to life," they said. "Season three builds on everything we've done before to tell a war story that's epic and emotional, spectacular and surprising. We can't wait for fans to join us in Alabasta, where the stakes are high... and the ducks are big.”

The official logline shared by Netflix is as follows: “War is coming for Monkey D. Luffy and the Straw Hat crew in the desert kingdom of Alabasta, Princess Vivi’s homeland. A rebellion threatens to tear the nation apart, fueled in secret by one of the Seven Warlords of the Sea, the ruthless Sir Crocodile, and his underground syndicate Baroque Works, who seek to conquer Alabasta for themselves. In a season defined by unbreakable bonds and impossible choices, the Straw Hats must face a brewing civil war and a powerful warlord to save Vivi’s kingdom before it crumbles into the sand. Fans can look forward to formidable new enemies and brand-new worlds where the stakes have never been higher.”

Seasons one and two of One Piece featured eight episodes each, so it's highly possible that season three will follow suit. Speaking to Teen Vogue from Cape Town for her cover story with Godoy, Chandran gave us a little tease: “I would say episode six of season three might be my favorite episode of all the seasons,” so definitely stay tuned as we learn more.

Has One Piece season 3 finished filming?

Season three of One Piece is currently still filming in South Africa. Netflix confirmed that production on the forthcoming season began in Cape Town on November 24, 2025. Speaking to Teen Vogue last month, Chandran revealed that the cast had already shot “so much” of the third season.

As Skylar, who plays Sanji, explained on the Spanish late-night show La Revuelta, the cast took a few weeks off from filming to promote season two. He said, too, that the crew would be back in South Africa by the end of the week of season two's release to resume filming.

There's been chatter that filming for season three will wrap this June, but Netflix hasn't confirmed anything, so we'll take everything with a grain of salt and wait for official confirmation.

In a video for Entertainment Weekly, Mackenyu, who plays Zoro, shared further details on the timelines, confirming that season one took nine months to film and season two took seven months. Netflix did indeed announce that season two of One Piece had begun production in South Africa on July 1, 2024; the streamer then confirmed that production had wrapped on February 4, 2025.

If season three follows a similar pattern, filming will likely wrap in the summer. But again, it's best to wait for official confirmation.

Will Netflix's One Piece continue beyond season 3?

Currently, Netflix has not announced plans for One Piece beyond season three. The streamer renewed One Piece for a second season in 2023, just a couple of weeks after the show's initial premiere. Oda Sensei himself made the announcement via Den Den Mushi. Season three then got an early renewal in 2025, when the first teaser for the sophomore season dropped.

In an interview with IGN, showrunner Joe Tracz and executive producer Becky Clements said the plan is to keep the series going for “multiple years,” but the number of seasons is still up in the air. However, they did tease a plan with Oda-sensei to continue for roughly “eight to ten” seasons. Tracz said that the Oda-approved window would be “the story he wants to make sure [they] tell in live-action,” but there’s a possibility of “continuing beyond that.”

Given that season two has been receiving positive reviews and most of the cast members have expressed a desire to play their roles for a long time, a renewal could be imminent, or the streamer could wait until season three arrives to decide the show's future. Either way, we will keep you posted as new information breaks!
